Amber Martinez - Honors Graduate of 2005
This UST Honors graduate interestingly found out about St. Thomas from a postcard in the mail. Originally from College Station, TX, Amber was a transfer student to UST, initially coming to study here with the intention of being closer to her family in Houston. However, “it was a great stroke of providence,” says Amber, because she could not have asked for more from her time at UST. “I heard about the Honors Program from the catalogue. I was intrigued by the academic rigor, the students in the program, and the wealth of reading material,” so she entered the program in 2001.
In December 2005, Amber graduated from UST with double majors in Psychology and Catholic Studies and double minors in Philosophy and Theology. She is currently enrolled in a PhD program in Clinical Psychology at Texas A&M University. Amber hopes to become a “Clinical Psychologist specializing in psycho-spirituality as it relates to depression, suicides, and trauma recovery.”
Though her doctoral coursework keeps her busy, in any free time she has left, Amber likes to watch movies, play the guitar, decorate her home and read, with her interests mainly in Italian art and history.
The first student from her high school to graduate from the Honors Program at UST and the first UST Honors student to attend A&M’s Clinical Psychology PhD program, Amber had this to say about her experience with Honors. “Though I sacrificed a lot of sleep and wanted to bang my head against a wall at times, the UST Honors Program has been the best investment of my time and money to date. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat. It taught me to think differently, write intelligently, and reason logically. I look at the world through a different lens.” |
