HONORS
Anthony J. Calleo - Honors Graduate of 2003
Anthony CalleoBorn and raised in Houston, Anthony is certainly not the typical Honors graduate. “I have caused more honors teachers to curse in a classroom setting than any other honors graduate,” he admitted. With more tattoos on his body than any other Honors graduate, in many ways, Anthony is one of the most memorable students to pass through the Honors Program.

Anthony first heard about UST from his high school. “I wanted to teach either philosophy or theology. UST had good programs for both,” so he decided to give St. Thomas a try. He also decided to give the Honors Program a try. His reaction? “The Honors Program was one of the single most enriching things I have ever done in my short life. It taught me a great deal about the intellectual and theoretical suppositions upon which our world and society are based. For a big nerd like me, it was the best thing ever.”

During his time at UST, with the help of close friends, Anthony created and ran a non-profit organization, known as the S.A.F.E. Center, that provided assistance to kids in abusive situations. The center was open for an impressive 5 ½ years.

In 2003, Anthony graduated from UST with a BA in Philosophy/Theology. He is currently a commercial real estate agent and partner in a small development company. Looking to the future, Anthony thinks law school may a possibility, or not. “I just want to spend more time with my wife and have some babies and be a good dad and husband. Everything else is tertiary.” His wife, Jessica Sepulveda Calleo, is also an Honors alum.

When asked about his thoughts concerning his experience with the Honors Program, Anthony had this to say: “The only thing negative I can think to say about the program is that when you get out of school and don’t wind up back in academia, you can feel almost outmoded outside of a classroom. You are interested in and know so much about things most people have never heard of or considered and/or they don’t care about. It can be a little frustrating. I mean really, as important as Adam Smith and the Invisible Hand are, most people think it’s some sort of sci-fi movie that went straight to video. Once you get over that, it was definitely worth my time, and I don’t say that about much.”
