Mary Green - Honors Freshman
Born and raised in Houston, Mary lives in Spring, a suburb of Houston about 30 minutes away from St. Thomas. Having gone to Providence Classical School for high school, she was on the Academic Dean’s List throughout her years there and just recently graduated with summa cum laude honors.
Mary first heard about UST when her sister was applying for colleges about seven years ago. When it came time for Mary to look into colleges for herself, she decided to check out UST. “It ended up being a perfect fit,” she said. “My high school was on the smaller side and St. Thomas offered a lot of the same style of learning that I’d experienced in high school but still on a smaller-sized basis.”
After finding out about the Honors Program during the application process, Mary was drawn to it. “The style of discussion and teaching is what I really thrive on; the learning that is more interactive and less lecture/facts based,” she explained. “I love to talk about books etc. rather than being talked at about the things I am learning. The Honors Program also seemed to offer an environment where I would be able to make good friends on a smaller level and thereby build a foundation for the rest of my years at St. Thomas.”
Mary plans to attend law school after college graduation, although the particular area of law she would like to pursue is still to be determined.
A talented musician, Mary has played the piano for as long as she can remember and has also dabbled in bass guitar. Though her love is classic rock music, Mary loves music in general. “I like to talk about and listen to all different kinds of music. It’s a way that I can connect with people very well.”
Mary also enjoys participating in and attending the theatre as well as going to museums. In fact, the convenient proximity of UST to the theater district and museums was another reason for her decision to come here.
Before starting her first year at UST this fall, Mary is getting some time to relax. Her many interests will certainly keep her occupied until school starts again. |
