Rebecca Heffern - Honors Freshman
Born and raised just outside of Jersey Village, Rebecca attended Jersey Village High School and graduated from there in May. A football filmer, she also took active roles in the Spanish Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes at school.
Rebecca first heard about UST as a sophomore in high school, when she was just beginning to look at schools. “I was looking at public, larger places, and I had no idea that there was a Catholic school right here in Houston,” said Rebecca. “When someone told me about it, I looked into it and saw that the idea of a Catholic school would be more for me.” After finding out more about St. Thomas, the decision was easy. “Considering what I want to do after college, what I want to study, and where I want to live during college (I wanted to stay close to home, but not too close), I decided that the University of St. Thomas was perfect for me.”
After checking out all the programs St. Thomas offers and speaking with former students, Rebecca also realized that the Honors Program would be good for her. “I heard that the program was challenging,” explained Rebecca, “but that what I would learn would be valuable in whatever I do in life.” Rebecca already has a head-start on the Honors reading load. Her favorite quote comes from St. Augustine’s Confessions: “I am but a little one yet my Father lives forever and my Protector is sufficient for me.”
When asked what she wanted to do after graduating from UST, Rebecca’s answer revealed so many possibilities still open to her future. “I can’t possibly know everything that God has in store for my future,” she said, “but I think that doing some mission work would be interesting, and I would be even more interested in going to a Spanish-speaking country. I am also considering religious life, or working in some sort of ministry, but I don’t know the specifics yet.”
This summer, Rebecca is getting a chance to read and spend time with the youth at her home parish, St. Maximilian Kolbe. She especially enjoys working with the retreat ministry there. She’s also very excited about coming to St. Thomas. “I am looking forward to being challenged academically, but also having a chance to grow in my faith and my knowledge of Catholic teachings.” |
