Amanda Baldwin - Honors Junior, International Studies & Environmental Studies
Born in Beaumont, TX, Amanda has live in Houston most of her life. She attended Incarnate Word Academy in Houston and then came to the University of St. Thomas.
After hearing about St. Thomas from friends and teachers in high school, Amanda came to visit and was impressed with UST. “IWA is a very small, all girls catholic school and I was looking for somewhere similar (though not all girls) to further my education. St. Thomas fit the bill perfectly.”
She also learned about the Honors Program during her visit. “Dr. Hall talked to all the prospective students about it and it seemed challenging and fun.” Amanda interviewed and was accepted. She’s now in her junior year in the program.
“My initial assessment was correct and I have enjoyed all my time in the Honors Program,” she said. “My favorite aspect is how the professors not only allow but encourage discussion and debate between the students on any pertinent topic imaginable.” Her only complaint was the amount of reading. “It can be a bit overwhelming at times, but it’s not that big of a deal.”
Along with the Honors Program, Amanda is completing a joint major in International Studies and Environmental Studies with minors in Philosophy and Spanish.
Outside of her curriculum requirements, Amanda is working at the UST Office of Admissions, assisting students in getting all the information they need to make an informed decision about college. “I also work with incoming freshmen making sure we get all the information we need from them. Additionally, I help plan the Academic Orientations and Preview Days that the school hosts every few months.” So, incoming freshmen, you’ve probably heard from or run into Amanda at one point in time during your matriculation process.
Aside from working at Admissions, Amanda is also involved in the International Studies Society and other organizations on campus. Though she has little free time left, Amanda does like to spend her spare time hanging out with her boyfriend, father and friends. “I also enjoy reading, writing short stories, shopping, and sleeping.”
After graduating from UST, Amanda intends to go to graduate school and get a Master’s in International Studies. “I want to eventually work for the US Foreign Service Department or be an International Environmental Lawyer.” |
