Cathy Monroe - Honors Junior, Theology
Born in a little town west of Fort Worth, Cathy’s family moved to Tennessee when she was two. Nine years later, they moved back to Fort Worth, where she attended Nolan Catholic High School.
After hearing about St. Thomas at her high school’s college fair, Cathy started seriously looking at UST. When a friend visited St. Thomas and loved it, Cathy decided to pay UST a visit too. “I really liked the university’s strong Catholic tradition and how everyone went out of their way to talk to me and make me feel more comfortable,” she said.
Planning to major in studio art at the time, Cathy was thrilled by UST’s connection with the Glassell School of Art. “You get to have a good, well-rounded core curriculum with the same level of art instruction as a professional art school,” she commented. “I’ve changed my major since then, but I’m still completely happy with my decision to come to St. Thomas.”
Cathy is now juggling a major in Theology with a minor in Philosophy and the Honors Program. She really enjoys the Honors classes. “I like all the classic works we get to read – most of which I probably would never have gotten around to reading otherwise,” she said.
“I think my favorite part of Honors has been all the professors we get to have. Honors is such a unique program that we get to see a lot more of our teachers’ personalities than we usually would in a regular class. I’m a lot more comfortable going to our Honors professors for help, even after I have finished their class.”
Cathy does have to admit that, considering the lengthy reading lists, sometimes “it is so difficult to force myself to sit down and actively read.”
After graduating from UST, Cathy hopes to have some time to travel to some of the places she’s been wanting to see, like Italy, Mexico, and Scotland. Graduate school is also in the plans for the future. She wants to get her Master’s in Theology and perhaps a PhD after that. Then, if possible, she would like to work in youth ministry or teach high school theology.
Outside of her schoolwork, Cathy was on the Residence Life staff as a Sophomore Advisor this past year and will be a Resident Assistant at Guinan this Fall. She’s also volunteering at Catholic Charities, helping with their refugee program.
Aside from that, she loves to read, “although I think my reading list is getting longer instead of shorter,” she admits. Cathy is also trying to utilize this summer to practice all the sports she’s been really bad at; so far, those have included racquetball and soccer. |
