Morgan Burton - Honors Junior, Psychology
Born in Houston and raised in Missouri City, Morgan attended the Michael DeBakey High School for Health Professions before enrolling at St. Thomas. “Funny story, actually. I’m here really by chance,” was Morgan’s response when I asked her how she came to be at St. Thomas.
During the process of applying to colleges senior year in high school, a friend told Morgan about his decision to apply to UST. “I had never even heard of the school, even though it was very close to my high school,” explained Morgan. Having known of other students from her high school who were attending UST at the time, she decided to come for a campus tour and visit them.
“I was really impressed with the academic setting and the wide range of classes that I could take within my major.” For Morgan, the smaller class size was very appealing. “The school was small enough for me to learn, so I was hooked. I applied, was accepted, and decided to go because I believed I could get the most well-rounded education at UST, which would give me a leg up in graduate studies and when applying to the workforce.”
After she was accepted to UST, Morgan browsed through the undergraduate catalog and discovered the Honors Program. “I wanted to be a part of it because I believed it would enhance my overall academic performance,” she said. “It would also allow me the opportunity to read books and study ideas that I probably wouldn’t have otherwise.”
Now going into her third year in the program, Morgan has to say, “I love the way classes are structured more like discussions rather than lectures. I also like the team-teaching each of the Great Books classes offers.”
She has some warnings for the incoming freshmen though. “One thing I could do without is the speed of reading. We could go through an entire book in the course of one or two class periods,” so be prepared to read a lot! “Even so, the thematic integration of the numerous works we read enhances the goals of each class even more completely.”
Along with the Honors courses, Morgan is also juggling a major in Psychology, a minor in Biology, and her involvement with the UST Martial Arts Club. After graduating from UST, graduate school is definitely in the plans. She hopes to get a PhD in psychology. After that, depending on her specialty, she would like to eventually work at the National Institutes of Health or become a consultant for psychobiological research. Another thought is the possibility becoming a science writer – she’s still deciding.
In the meantime, Morgan is just enjoying her college years, making it a point to carve out spare time in her schedule. “Usually it’s spent browsing the Internet, watching TV late at night, hanging out with friends, reading (magazines, newspapers, and occasionally leisure books), or catching up on non-academic projects (i.e. laundry).” |
