Maurielle Laurenne Balczon - Honor Freshman
A native Houstonian, Maurielle just graduated in May from Tomball High School. Highly active in her school, Maurielle was part of Phi Theta Kappa, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, UIL writing team, Debate team, and Student Government. Her efforts and talents also merited awards that include: Who’s Who Among American High School Students, President’s List at Tomball College, National Charity League Service Award, and the 2006 Miss Tomball Pageant First Runner Up and Best Contestant Entry.
Her extracurricular activities also extend beyond her school and into her community. Involved with the Houston Holocaust Museum, Houston Ballet Theater, and Northwest Assistance Ministries, Maurielle also tutors and is currently working on a project of greatest interest to her.
Working with the Tomball Community Center, Maurielle is teaching free ballet classes to underprivileged children in the area. She admitted, “My goal is larger than ballet technique. I want to create a place where children learn on many levels and apply what they learn to life itself.”
Now an experienced ballet dancer, Maurielle first began dancing when she was 3. She notes that working on this project has also helped her grow as a person. “I matured in my understanding of the work it takes to not only realize the needs of others, but also what it takes to get those needs met.”
Maurielle will soon have to hand over the task to someone else as she heads to St. Thomas for her first year. “UST has always been a respected university in my household,” said Maurielle. Though accepted into nine other universities, UST was still Mauriell’s first choice. “I chose UST because of its focus on educating the whole person while integrating classroom academics with community involvement,” Maurielle explained. “At UST I found an intimate academic environment where I could grow spiritually and personally.”
After graduating from UST, Maurielle plans to attend graduate school. She hopes to become an international business representative or diplomat. In the meantime, she wants to major in International Studies and Business Administration and enjoy her college years. |
