Guendalina Guidotti - Honors Senior, Education
Born in Mexico City, Guendalina has lived in Houston since the age of five. She attended Stratford High School before coming to UST.
It was during her senior year at Stratford that this Italian Honors student first heard about St. Thomas. A UST Presidential Ambassador came to her high school for college night and convinced her to tour the campus and visit the classes. “Once I did, I was sold,” said Guendalina. “I loved the small classes; the professors seemed so helpful, the students were incredibly friendly, and I was really excited about getting a liberal arts education.”
After hearing about the Honors Program from her admissions counselor, Guendalina decided to give it a try. “I interviewed and was incredibly intimidated by the process,” she admitted. “I was not accustomed to speaking up in front of my peers, nor did I expect professors to blatantly disagree with me.” When she was accepted into program, however, she welcomed the challenge.
Looking back, Guendalina says, “I cannot imagine my years at UST without the Honors Program. The professors exhibit a level of respect for the students that is truly stunning. We are all treated as highly intelligent individuals with opinions worth hearing and discussing. I always feel challenged but also feel successful. I am reading books I never imagined I could comprehend, and I am also discussing them at length and expanding upon them. Although the coursework is at times daunting, I have found the Honors Program to really focus and enrich my other studies here at the university.”
Guendalina is currently majoring in Education (Early childhood-4th grade). After graduating from UST, she hopes to teach at a Catholic elementary school, preferably kindergarten or first grade. Her fluency in four different languages – English, Italian, Spanish and French – is sure to assist her in this task.
Further into the future, graduate school is a possibility, most likely to pursue a degree in Theology. In the meantime, she’s juggling an Honors courseload along with other responsibilities on campus. She’s acting as a Resident Assistant at Guinan Hall; she often participates in and helps with Campus Ministry activities. She’s also a justice on the Judicial Council and secretary for the Association of Texas Professional Educators.
When she’s not busy with her many activities, Guendalina enjoys reading (especially children’s books), watching movies, and going dancing with friends, especially Salsa. She also enjoys doing crafty activities like sewing, crocheting, making jewelry and painting.
