Leila Hamzo - Honors Senior
Born in Lebanon, Leila moved with her family to the United States when she was 5. She grew up in Houston and attended Alief Hastings High School.
Leila is the second child in a family of three girls. She heard about St. Thomas from her older sister, Maria Hamzo, who attended the university and graduated in 2005. Leila would come visit her sister and “every time I’d visit, I’d really enjoy my time” said Leila. “I grew to love the small school environment. It’s easy to connect with people here and find your niche.”
Leila’s sister Maria happened to have been in the Honors Program as well, so Leila was quite familiar with the program. Following in her sister’s footsteps, Leila also joined the Honors Program. “The program is great” she said. “Our class is good at bouncing off each other’s thoughts and really debating things. We have lots of fun together and the class can be very intellectually stimulating. It’s different than an ordinary lecture class.”
Leila did have some words of advice for incoming Honors students though. “The Honors Program is what you make of it. If your classmates are talkative and enjoy debating, then it will be an enjoyable class. It’s all about the dynamic of how your particular class interacts. The readings can be difficult to keep up with, but you try your best and contribute as much input as possible.”
Leila is currently majoring in Finance at UST. She’s heavily involved in residence life and student government. She’s also earned membership in the Cameron Business Society, Philosophy Honor Society, and the Economics Honor Society. After graduating from UST, Leila hopes to attend graduate school.
When not busy with her many commitments, Leila enjoys the typical activities – watching movies, listening to music, spending time with friends, reading, and writing, just to name a few.
