Rob MacArthur - Honors Senior, English & Philosophy
Born in South Bend, Indiana, Rob has lived most of his life in Houston but regards Northern Minnesota as his home. “My family has lived in Northern Minnesota for generations,” Rob explained. “It's where I understand the way people interact, it's where my father has a house and orchard in the woods, and it's where I hope to live.”
With a father who is an English professor here, Rob has heard about UST for as long as he can remember. “I went to St. Thomas initially because I couldn’t afford a college education elsewhere, where I would have to pay tuition,” Rob admitted honestly. “I stayed because of the excellent Philosophy program.”
Receiving a letter of invitation to interview for the Honors Program, Rob went and was accepted into the program. “I have thoroughly enjoyed it; if it was up to me, every class would be conducted this way.”
With majors in English and Philosophy and a minor in Creative Writing, Rob has quite a load on his hands, but he also made time for fencing, drama, and the Laurels. He’s hoping to be in Rashamon in the spring, as well as stage a ten-minute piece he wrote for the Undergraduate Symposium. Aside from that, he also reads, play video games, surf the Internet, and sometimes cook.
After graduating from UST, Rob hopes to get his PhD in philosophy. Why? “Because ignorance of philosophy is what's wrong with modern society.” He goes on to explain, “namely, people have all the wrong philosophies and act on all the wrong principles, but they don't know that that is what they are doing. People make ethical assertions and metaphysical assumptions without having the slightest idea that reason has anything to do with what they are talking about.”
Rob has got his eye on a graduate school in Scotland. “The professor there is the world's foremost analytic thomist.” After that? College professorship, of course. “Who cares about money?”
Simply in the interests of trivia, some facts about Rob: “I have a blood brother; I once had my younger sister convinced that I was a werewolf; I invented a drink called a ‘rail car.’”
