HONORS
Roy Mitchell - Honors Senior, Political Science
Born and raised in Pearland, Roy attended Pearland High School before joining the student community at St. Thomas. “My dad told me about UST,” said Roy, “and I decided to go here because of the small classes and great sense of family that exists on our campus.”

After coming to UST for an open house event, Roy also found out about the Honors Program. Now in his final year in the program, Roy can say that “The Honors Program is the best academic program at the university. It combines so many elements of all of your other classes and the team-teaching style provides a great classroom dynamic.” He admits, “the only think I dislike so far thus is not meeting with my class as often as we did freshman and sophomore years.”

Along with an Honors courseload, Roy is majoring in Political Science, with a minor in Philosophy, and actively involved in student organizations on campus. He’s worked with the Student Government Association since his freshman year, serving as Vice-President last year and President this year. He’s also helping to coordinate Habitat for Humanity events on campus, when he’s not making taking part in various club sports on campus.

Aside from that, Roy is also juggling work on campus and off campus, which usually ranged from life-guarding to bartending. It’s hard to imagine he would have much free time left, but when he does get some time, Roy enjoys playing guitar and singing in a band that frequently plays for campus events. “I also love to lift weight, so I spend large amounts of time in Jerabeck.”

After graduating from UST, Roy hopes to attend law school. His senior Honors thesis will deal with the current notion of justice in the American judicial system.
