Jennifer Callon - Honors Sophomore, Theology
Born and raised in New Orleans, LA, Jennifer moved to the Woodlands six years ago when her father changed jobs. She attended The Woodlands High School and graduated in 2005.
Her youth minister had attended St. Thomas. “I chose UST because I wanted to major in Theology somewhere that wasn’t too far away from my family.”
When her admissions counselor told her about the Honors Program, Jennifer interviewed for a spot and is currently a sophomore in the program. “I enjoy the program very much,” she said. “I like the variety of teachers and the materials we read in class.”
Aside from the Honors Program, Jennifer is majoring in Theology and minoring in Philosophy. Why a major in Theology? “In the middle of high school, I became very active in my faith and realized I was parched for the Living Water that only learning more about God would satiate” explained Jennifer. “Also, I feel a tug on my heart that God is wanting me to pursue a degree in Theology.”
What does she want to do with a Theology degree? “I’m thinking about being a youth minister, but we’ll see what God has planned for me.” In the meantime, she enjoys hanging out in the chapel, the library and with her friends.
If she’s not doing that, she’s working on activities for Chi Rho Club (Theology Club) and Ain Karem (Women’s Group) or volunteering at Palmer Way Station, where she helps to make the food and feed the homeless. Lately, Jennifer has been spending more of her time organizing what is known as Holy Hour.
“I wanted to have a time at night where a majority of students who didn’t have classes could be present with Jesus in adoration for an hour,” said Jennifer. “By God’s providence, Holy Hour became a weekly event on Monday nights from 8-9 pm.”
Begun this past spring semester with the help of Sr. Clare, the Basilian fathers and friends at UST, Jennifer’s idea for Holy Hour has had a nice start, with about 10-15 people attending each week. Holy Hour will continue this coming year, though the time and day may change.
Jennifer extends an invitation to all students: “Holy Hour is welcome to everyone who would like to spend an hour in front of the Blessed Sacrament, sing songs of praise and worship, recite the rosary, and meditate in prayer.” Jennifer has some changes in mind for this year activities though, “maybe doing some Scripture readings or sometimes doing the Stations of the Cross.” So do come by and join in. |
