Jessica Stachyra - Honors Sophomore, Philosophy
Born in Stamford, CT, Jessica spent her life in Stamford, Poland and Houston. She attended Klein High School before coming to UST.
After hearing about St. Thomas from her friend Veronica Vittone, another Honors sophomore, Jessica decided to see it for herself. “I took a look at it and loved the fact that it was a small school, with a stellar pre-med program. I was afraid that in college I would be just one in a crowd, but here it seems that everyone knows each other, if at least by sight, and all the people here are nice.”
Receiving an invitation to interview, Jessica came and the rest is history. “So far I greatly enjoy it; it's nice being in a seminar setting where you're part of the discussion and learning experience, and not just sitting in a class taking notes. I really enjoy how the professors guide the students and make them make their own decisions, defend their view points, and encourage intelligent debate and discussion.”
Jessica is majoring in Philosophy. After graduating from UST, she hopes to gain acceptance into medical school. In the meantime, her schoolwork, research on Drosophila with the biology department, and volunteering activities take up most of her time.
In her spare time, Jessica enjoys “drawing and experimenting with different types of mediums. Currently I'm playing around with clay and scratchboards. I enjoy dancing, particularly salsa and swing dancing, and horseback riding. When the sky is clear at night I like to star gaze and I am attempting to learn bonsai.”
Trivia facts about Jessica: “My family comes from Poland and every summer I go there to visit my family and friends. I hope to move there one day and practice medicine in Krakow. Once I wanted to be an ornithologist and I hope to have an aviary in my house. I also enjoy Chinese food and am fascinated by sports cars, especially Lamborghinis. I own a barking cat fish.” |
