HONORS
Joe Morton - Honors Sophomore, Philosophy & Political Science
Born and raised in Highlands, TX, Joe was homeschooled before coming to St. Thomas for his undergraduate years. “My high school education was heavily weighted towards logic, critical thinking and debate,” Joe told me.

“I spent many, many hours working on debate and moot court cases. I also took Logic and Philosophy courses from outside professors, including two UST professors, Jeffrey Zents and John Rocha.”

When it came time to choose a university, location and the quality of education led Joe to St. Thomas. When his advisor told him about the Honors Program, Joe interviewed and is now in his junior year in the program.

“The discussion format allows me to question and challenge my professors. I learn much more concretely when my professors actually critique my opinions and interpretations of material, instead of simply teaching the material alone.”

Joe is majoring in Philosophy and Political Science. He’s looking to attend law school after graduating from UST. “Constitutional Law fascinates me,” he revealed. “It is, possibly, the only real area where a layman can significantly affect political issues without holding public office.”

“I have a respect for the U.S. Constitution, and feel that the political successes and failures of the nation rest largely upon our interpretation (or misinterpretation) of that single document.” In the future, he hopes to practice law in Washington D.C., because “it’s where the action is.”

In the meantime, you can usually find Joe on campus playing soccer with the UST team or working on Augustine program activities. His volunteer work within the Augustine program includes activities at Palmer Way Station, the Houston Arboretum, the Houston Zoo and other locations. Between school, Resident Life work and Augustine, Joe has very little “extra” time, but when he does, he enjoys writing very much.

About his time at UST, Joe had this to say: “I’m going in debt for this education but it’s worth every penny (with interest).”
