HONORS
Kemly Philip - Honors Sophomore, Bioinformatics
Kemly PhilipBorn and raised in Houston, Kemly graduated from Bellaire High School before entering UST.

Having lived quite close to the university, Kemly had always heard of its reputation as a challenging school. “It was the last, only online and free application I completed. When the time came to make the final decision, everything pointed to UST.”

Currently majoring in Bioinformatics with minors in Chemistry and Spanish, Kemly has quite a few things to juggle along with the Honors courses, but she’s enjoying the program so far. “I especially like the structure of the class where students are free to bring their ideas to open discussion. I also like the “team teaching” policy because it is quite interesting to hear the viewpoints of two professors, who teach in different fields, concerning a topic, sometimes amusing as well.”

Like other Honors students, though, Kemly has to admit, “The only thing that tires me at times is the tremendous amount of reading done.” Not to worry, though, her college experience has shown her that “a little more and wiser time management is all that is needed to complete your assignments promptly.”

Aside from schoolwork, Kemly is also acting as the Membership Coordinator of the Best Buddies chapter at UST. She’s involved with Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honor Society, the American Chemical Society, and the Pre-Health Professions Society. You will even find Kemly in productions held by the UST Pop Singers.

Kemly is engaged in rigorous research with the Biology department, working under the direction of Dr. Debra Bramblett. This experience will prepare her well for her future profession. After graduating from UST, Kemly hopes to pursue either a degree in medicine or in biomedical research.

As if those activities are not enough to fill her plate, Kemly also teaches Sunday school at her parish. It is no wonder that she would have little free time left in her schedule, but when she does get some spare time, she really loves to play the violin and piano, sing and dance. She had her debut as a dancer recently in an Indian classical dance style known as Bharatanatyam. “I also enjoy reading, watching movies, and spending time with my family and friends.”
