Whitney Stewart - Honors Sophomore, History
Born in Mobile, AL, Whitney lived in Jackson, MS until 7 and then moved to Kingwood, where she’s been since. She attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts.
While at HSPVA, Whitney participated in the Young Audience’s Group, which traveled to local and statewide elementary schools to educate people on the history of dance.
Having started dancing at 4, Whitney has been in a number of competitions and concerts over the year and has been involved with Kingwood Jazz and Company for 10 years, as well as the HSPVA Concert Dancers.
With HSPVA literally a block away from St. Thomas, Whitney certainly noticed the UST campus while in high school. Then, senior year, she decided to take a look, and “after months of deliberation, decided on St. Thomas.”
After receiving information about the Honors Program, Whitney interviewed and is now in her second year in the program. “The program so far has been interesting, informative, and a blast to be involved with. The discussions in class and the literature we read are my favorite parts about the Honors Program.”
Aside from her school courseload, Whitney is also dancing at the Houston Metropolitan Dance Center, teaching dance classes in local studios around Houston, and choreographing dance pieces for local studios and companies, to be showcased at concerts and competitions.
When she’s not busy doing that, Whitney likes to “cook, read, run, spend time with my friends, and lay on the couch and watch some good ole cartoons.” When she gets some time later on, she would really enjoy going to cooking school and honing her skills in the kitchen.
After graduating from St. Thomas, Whitney hopes to attend graduate school and get her Master or PhD. After that, the plan is to teach history at the university level. Why history? “During my junior year of high school, I had the most extraordinary teacher of all time, Mr. James Boyce,” Whitney began to explain. “This was the first class of my life that wasn’t just lecture but instead allowed the students to truly voice their opinions.”
“Mr. Boyce is probably the reason I became engrossed with history and the prospect of teaching,” Whitney told me. “I have always been a performer so the idea of standing and speaking in front of many is exciting and intriguing. Having felt the difference one teacher can make on a student’s life, I hope to make that same impact when I move into my profession.” |
