The NAFSA Consular Affairs Liaison Subcommittee has confirmed that all Spanish consulates in the United States are now requiring an FBI Background Check (not from local police) for students going into Spain for more than six months. Study abroad coordinators are advised to encourage their future study abroad participants to apply for an FBI Background Check as soon as possible when intending to go to Spain for more than six months.
Due to a delay from the FBI in processing the background checks, the Spanish Consulate in Los Angeles is allowing students to apply for their visas without their FBI Background Check as long as the student includes "proof" that he/she applied for the background check along with his/her application materials. Please note that as of today, the Spanish Consulate in Los Angeles is the only consulate that has confirmed this flexibility in the process. Therefore, please check with the Spanish consulate in your jurisdiction before submitting the student's visa application materials.
