Each semester, several courses are designated as service learning courses. In such classes, students connect classroom learning with service in the community. Each instructor establishes requirements and grading criteria.

Departments designate at least one upper division course as writing intensive. This course is required of all majors. Each instructor establishes course requirements and grading procedures for writing intensive courses. In such courses, the instructor will reinforce the elements of good writing common to all written communication, as well as introduce the student to issues and forms of writing especially relevant to his/her academic discipline. Every student will take at least one writing course in his/her major.
