Applicants for the traditional 4-8 certificate must have completed Arts and Science courses plus 24 credit hours in professional education. All candidates for 4- 8 certification must complete:

Reading
Candidates for 4-8 certification must complete at least six credit hours of student teaching (10-12 weeks all day), a one-year supervised internship, or complete two years teaching experience in a TEA approved 4-8 classroom. Student teaching, one year supervised internships, or two year teaching experience must be done at the level and in the content area for which certification is being sought. The University of St. Thomas is approved for the following 4-8 teaching fields:
English Language Arts and Reading
English Language Arts and Reading/Social Studies
Mathematics
Mathematics/Science
Science
Social Studies
