Professional Certificates in Education
The School of Education offers a variety of programs leading to Texas Professional Certificates. Requirements are consistent with Texas Education Agency guidelines and prepare students for specific professional positions in schools. All programs require candidates to have taught for two years in an accredited school, and to have completed a master’s degree. In addition to completion of course requirements, candidates must achieve a satisfactory level of performance on the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExES) in the area chosen for professional certification. Professional certification programs offered include: Educational Administration, Educational Diagnostician, Reading Specialist, and School Counselor. |
Educational Administration (36 hours)
The program leading to a professional Principalship certificate is designed to provide individuals with an opportunity to acquire knowledge and practical experience for assuming the role of principal and a variety of other administrative positions in the public schools.
To fulfill certification requirements, the individual must complete 9 hours of core courses (EDUC 5301, 5302, and 5303), 9 hours of generic courses (EDUC 5310, 5315, and 5335), 18 hours of specialization (resource area) courses (EDUC 5390, 5391, 5392, 5395, 5396, and 5397). |
Educational Diagnostician (36 hours)
The graduate program leading to a professional Educational Diagnostician certificate is designed to produce a skilled specialist in the administration and application of diagnostic techniques with demonstrated competency in the planning and implementation of instructional programs for exceptional children. Candidates, who do not already possess a master’s degree, must complete a total of 36 graduate hours beyond initial certification to include 9 hours of core courses (EDUC 5301, 5302, and 5303), 9 hours of generic courses (EDUC 5320, 5331, and 5339), and 18 hours of specialization (resource area) courses (EDUC 5322, 5345, 5341, 5342, 5343 and 5344). Candidates who already possess a master’s degree may omit 3 hours (EDUC 5303) from the core courses. |
Reading Specialist (24-36 hours)
The graduate program leading to the professional Reading Specialist certificate is designed to produce master classroom teachers with special expertise in the area of reading skill development. The program requires a total of 36 graduate hours beyond initial certification to include 12 hours in reading, 3 hours in linguistics, 9 hours of educational foundations, and a minimum of three years teaching experience in an accredited school. Candidates who already possess a graduate degree may omit the 9 hours of Educational Foundations.
All candidates for Reading Specialist must complete: EDUC 5314, 5320, 5325, 5331, 5345, 5370, 5377, 5380, and BIED 5333. Candidates who do not already possess a master’s degree must also complete EDUC 5301, 5302, 5303, and an internship. |
Professional Counselor
The Counselor Education Program prepares students to qualify as professional school counselors, licensed professional counselors, or both. All of the Counselor Education Program courses probe the dynamics of interpersonal relationships, including those related to ethnicity, race, class, gender, and distinctive populations. In addition, the Counselor Education Program considers pertinent professional, ethical, and legal issues in professional counseling. Research in professional counseling, role-playing, and in vivo experiences are included in the Counselor Education Program.
Students pursuing the professional school counselor credential must successfully complete 9 hours of core courses (EDUC 5301, EDUC 5302, EDUC 5303), 9 hours of generic courses (EDUC 5320, EDUC 5335, EDUC 5339), and 18 hours of resource courses (EDUC 5357, EDUC 5358, EDUC 5359, EDUC 5366, EDUC 5367, EDUC 5368). This program meets the State of Texas course requirements for professional school counselor. These requirements are subject to change by the State of Texas.
In addition to the above-named courses, those pursuing the licensed professional counselor credential must take four additional courses (EDUC 5365, EDUC 5369, PSYC 5337, PSYC 5341).
