Requirements for Initial Certification As a Classroom Teacher
The University of St. Thomas offers a variety of programs leading toward the EC-4, 4-8, 8-12, and All-Level certificates. All candidates must have one or more teaching fields plus at least 24 – 27 semester hours of professional education. All graduate level candidates for initial certification must complete the following UST courses or their equivalent: EDUC 5311 Classroom Management, EDUC 5320 Exceptionality in Children and Youth, EDUC 5330 Curriculum and Instruction, EDUC 5332 Educational Psychology, and EDUC 5335 Teaching Multicultural Populations.
To be admitted to the teacher education program, students must have a 3.0 or above GPA in the last 60 hours of course work. Applicants must also have passing scores under current standards for all three sections of the THEA and must have submitted an Application for Admission to Teacher Education form.
In order to obtain initial certification students may choose to student teach for one semester, fulfill a one-year supervised internship, teach in an accredited school for two years, or teach for one-year with a mentor teacher, at the level and in the area of certification.
The
University
of
St. Thomas
offers an alternative route certification program as an option for receiving initial certification. This may be done on the graduate level. This option is available for people who want to begin teaching immediately. While applicants for the alternative route certification program may not be required to take as many credit hours in professional education as those enrolled in the traditional certification program, they must indicate mastery of subject matter by achieving passing scores on the TExES content area test for which they are seeking certification and have a UST mentor for each year enrolled in the program. The certification officer will provide a program for qualified candidates.
All certification/program requirements are subject to changes made by the State Board for Educational Certification (SBEC). |
