The following provides more detail about the essay, interview, and the writing sample that are part of the admissions process for the MA and Certificate programs in Faith and Culture. Please refer to the CFC Admissions Requirements Web page for a Checklist of all required documents for application.
- Essay: Applicants must submit a one to two page essay (double-spaced) in which applicants indicate their expectations and the goals they hope to achieve in the program. The top of the document must include 1) the name of the applicant, 2) the semester in which he or she anticipates to begin the program (e.g. fall, 2010), and 3) the program being applied for (MAFC or Certificate). Please avoid detailed background and focus on why you have decided to apply to this program, what you hope to accomplish with it (expectations of the program), and how you anticipate the program fits into your long-term goals. Consider the following sample:
Doe Sample
MAFC Program, Fall 2010
The text of the first paragraph begins here, double spaced. Please be concise. Grammar, spelling, etcetera, reflective of a graduate program is also taken into consideration…
After the Applicant’s file is complete, the applicant must also:
- Interview: All applicants who meet the basic requirements (Criteria A or B) will be interviewed. In the case of long distance or undue hardship, this interview may be conducted by phone. Applicants will receive a written invitation to interview with two faculty members of the Center for Faith and Culture. The interview itself does not imply acceptance into the program. After the interview, the two faculty members confer with the CFC Admissions Committee who reviews student application documentation and credentials. The interview normally takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
- Writing Sample: Immediately following the interview, the CFC provides students with a text and reflection questions on a subject related to faith and culture. Students are then required to submit a written reflection and commentary on the reflection questions, completed on the same day as their interview. The purpose of the writing sample is to illustrate the student’s ability to analyze, organize and write in a manner consistent with the requirements for graduate work. Students are given approximately 15 minutes to read the text and up to an additional 30 minutes to write their commentary.
