About the J Michael Miller Endowed Chair
The J. Michael Miller Endowed Chair in Catholic Studies honors UST’s Basilian president, who served from 1997-2003. Pope John Paul II appointed Archbishop Miller as Secretary to the Congregation for Catholic Education for the Vatican and ordained him as Titular Archbishop of Vertara. In 2007 Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Miller as coadjuctor Archbishop of Vancouver, B.C. A gift of $1 million from an anonymous donor will endow the new chair.
"The Catholic Studies Program is honored by the establishment of the J. Michael Miller Endowed Chair. The endowment affirms a vision common to both Pope John Paul II and Archbishop Miller: the importance of theology in its relationships with all other disciplines in the University as well as its embodiment in cultures around the globe. I hope that this initial endowment will inspire others to financially support Catholic Studies programs, such as a future lecture series in honor of Archbishop Miller, to explicate the role of Catholic thought in relationship to professions and to culture. We also hope that Catholic Studies students will take advantage of the new Archbishop Miller Scholarship that was created simultaneously with the endowed chair." |
