Donors may choose several ways to make a gift to UST, including cash, check, credit card, stock and securities, gifts of property and real estate, and gifts-in kind (donations of goods and services).
The designation of a gift is at the donor’s discretion. Donations of any amount may be made to a restricted fund, and thereby directed for a specific use, or to an unrestricted fund, which will be used to support the university’s highest priorities.
Planned giving enables philanthropic individuals to make larger gifts than they could make from their income. While some planned gifts provide a life-long income to the donor, others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for UST and other heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor’s estate. Gifts, made during lifetime or at death, may include bequests, annuities or gifts of retirement assets or life insurance. The university has a Certified Financial Planner on staff to help you determine your planned gift options.

Every year, the university receives over $100,000 in matching gift dollars, essentially doubling or tripling the donations of our alumni, friends and parents. The majority of these funds support the activities directly related to our students.
Many companies sponsor matching gift programs to encourage employees to support their colleges and universities. If you or your spouse works for a matching gift company, you can double or triple your gift to UST.
A gift to UST is a unique way to honor a special individual, occasion or the memory of a friend or loved one. The university offers several naming opportunities of prominent landmarks on campus, including buildings, classrooms, laboratories and other facilities. Named gifts are a meaningful, lasting tribute to the honoree.
Gifts of Securities
Gifts of securities often confer significant tax benefits on the donor. For example, contributions of appreciated securities held for over a year are generally deductible at market value, regardless of what the donor paid for the securities. In addition, you can avoid the capital gain tax with a gift of securities.
How to Notify UST of a Gift of Securities
In order to give prompt and accurate credit to all gifts received, it is important to notify us of your gift so we can correctly identify the donor. Please instruct your broker to include your name and address in the DTC transfer instructions and notify UST. Please contact the University with the following information: the donor name, address and phone number as well as the securities detail including the type of security (public, private, restricted), the number of shares and the date you intend to make the gift.
For information on donating securities or to notify the university of a donation, please contact the Office of Institutional Advancement at email@example.com or 713-525-3100.
