End of the Year Giving

The University of St. Thomas will be closed for the holidays December 24th through January 3, 2011. However, we have staff on call to assist with any end of the year gift.

Good news!  As part of the just-enacted tax package, Congress has reinstated a popular contribution incentive for donors 70 ½ and older. Please read details below about this wonderful giving opportunity.

Important details on various giving opportunities for year end 2010 contributions:

Cash Gifts:

  • To be delivered no later than 3:00 P.M. local time (Central) on 12/31/2010. Please call one of the on-call staff listed above.

Checks Gifts:

  • All checks should be post marked no later than 12/31/2010. The check should be made to University of St. Thomas and sent to:

     University of St. Thomas
     Office of Institutional Advancement
     3800 Montrose Blvd.
     Houston, TX 77006

  • All electronic checks can be made on UST’s online giving site www.stthom.edu/give_online.

Credit Card Gifts:

  • All credit card contributions should be made online before 2:30 P.M. (Central) local time on 12/31/2010. To make an online credit card contributions please go to: www.stthom.edu/give_online

Stock Gifts:

  • All electronic transfer of securities should be initiated by your financial institution no later end of business day on 12/31/2010.
  • All physical shares need to be delivered on or before 3:00 P.M. on (Central time) on 12/31/2010 to the University. If you wish to deliver during our holiday break, please contact one of the staff listed above. We will meet you and provide you with stock power form for your signature.


Below is the information you will need for Electronic Transfer of Stock:
The University has two accounts that securities can be transferred to, depending on the designation of the gift, endowed fund or unrestricted and/or non-endowed funds.

Please note that the University is required to notify the bank of any stock gift prior to the transfer by the donor agent. Please call Roya Esfandi at 281-795-5170 prior to transferring a stock gift to the University account.

Transfer Instructions to Endowed (Permanent Interest bearing) Funds:
The University’s broker is The Bank of New York. The transfer of funds from the donor’s broker account to University’s account is accomplished via Depository Trust Company (DTC). To perform such a transfer, simply notify your broker of the securities to be transferred and provide the following instructions

Charitable IRA Contribution:
Don’t miss out!  You can give more than you think you can if you use your IRA. 

This important giving opportunity expires December 31, 2011!

If you are over age 70 ½, the Federal government permits you to rollover up to $100,000 from your IRA to charity without increasing your taxable income or paying any additional tax.  These tax-free rollover gifts could be $1,000, $10,000 or any amount up to $100,000 this year.  The gift satisfies your Required Minimum Distribution for the year, if you prefer to not keep the RMD for personal use.  Contact Diane Thornton at 281-389-5746 for specific information on how to make this qualified charitable transfer.

Matching Gift:
Please remember that many companies sponsor matching gift programs to encourage employees to support their colleges and universities. If you or your spouse works for a matching gift company, you can double or triple your gift to UST.  Check with your company’s Human Resource Department to see if a matching gift program is in place or contact us after the holidays at 713-942-3415.
