Casey Johnson likes to use his mind. That’s why he finds his UST education to be so satisfying—it is preparing him to be a Catholic leader for life beyond academia.
“UST is teaching me how to think for myself—that’s a critical quality in a leader. The brilliant discussions I have had with my fellow freshman and our professors in the Honors Program have forced me to look beyond myself and my beliefs,” he says. “We’ve touched on profound and important subjects that just wouldn’t get brought up in a typical class. I’m learning what it means to live a self-examined life.”
One aspect of his life that he’s examined closely is community service. As a member of Augustine Hall, he has participated in numerous service projects. Despite not having any classes on Friday mornings, Casey and his roommate still get up early and go to the Way Station at Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church to serve the homeless of Houston. “We go to see the faces of the homeless as we serve them food and brighten their day. The experience is priceless,” he says.
He also enjoys Augustine Hall’s focus on interfaith dialogue. He and classmates have traveled to a Hari Krishna temple and a Turkish culture center, and have participated in an UST-hosted interfaith peace celebration to foster communication between different religions.
