EDUCATING LEADERS OF FAITH & CHARACTER
Thomas Mendez
International Studies (major)
Spanish/Latin American and Latino Studies (minor)
Kingwood, Texas

Thomas Mendez is gaining the leadership skills at UST that he needs to pursue his future dream. “I hope to work in human rights, possibly with the Human Rights Watch or another non-governmental organization that promotes the rights of men and women across the world,” says Thomas.

He currently serves as the vice president of the Student Government Association and was a co-founder of the Student Organization of Latinos, and is Vice President of Public Relations, Fundraising and Partnership for the Center for International Studies’ Micro-Credit Program. One of most successful—and proudest—accomplishments to date was planning the Dum Spiro event, the inaugural fundraising event for the Micro-Credit Program.

“Having the opportunity to work in a non profit while still in college and working with potential donors and building those relationships have been a great experience. We’re doing something that not only affects the University’s campus but also changes the world,” he says.

He has also helped organize a Christmas St Basil coffee sale. The coffee was a fair trade product with all proceeds sent to aid Brazilian missionaries in Latin America. He also volunteered at the Second Annual Presidential Day of Service at the Houston Zoo, where he helped clean up the area, making it a more pleasant experience for visitors. His service resulted in an “Emerging Leader” award from UST, which is given to freshmen or sophomores who have proven themselves to be leaders.

Overall, Thomas feels the UST is providing him with a high quality Catholic education and many experiences, including the opportunity to study Latin American culture and the Spanish language in Merida, Mexico and Argentina.

“UST is preparing me to live and work ethically in a modern world,” says Thomas. “The University is giving me the tools I need to make healthy, ethical decisions in my personal and professional life. Most importantly, UST has equipped me with effective communication and leadership skills through practical hands-on experiences. My experiences here have taught me not to forget where I am at the moment, but to still look forward to see where I’m going.”
