2nd Collection Sept. 13-14 Supports UST Scholarships

Christina Montoya. Photo by Troy FieldsWith limited financial resources, Christina Montoya’s dream of attending a Catholic university might never have been realized. Montoya applied to UST and received scholarships to help offset tuition. She has done exceptionally well as a finance and economics major in UST’s BBA/MBA joint degree program.

Parishioners in the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston are invited to support scholarships for students like Montoya. The Second Collection for Catholic Higher Education will occur on Saturday, Sept. 13 and Sunday, Sept. 14, 2014. Funds collected support the University of St. Thomas Basilian Fathers Scholarship Fund and the Catholic University of America.

Montoya grew up in a close-knit Catholic family that taught her the value of hard work and the importance of a college education.

“My sister graduated from UST, and I will graduate in 2015,” Montoya said. “We’re proud of this legacy, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to attend a quality, faith-based university. It has changed my life.”

Nearly 90 percent of University of St. Thomas students receives scholarships or financial aid. Providing these scholarships helps to relieve the academic stresses of hard working students.

Montoya takes to heart a treasured piece of advice she received from her grandmother: “Work hard and never waste the sacrifice someone made for you to be successful.”

With her high grade point average, volunteer service and promising future, Montoya is certainly making her family proud.
