Men Win Big, Lose Nail Biter in Classic
Photo: Travis LampleyThe University of St. Thomas men’s basketball team played in the Halo Classic at Our Lady of the Lake University this weekend, Nov. 16-17.

The men played two games which ended in a big win and a hard loss.
On the first day of the tournament, the Celts defeated Lubbock Christian University, 70-54. The Celts came out knocking down 3-pointers against LCU going six of 10 in the first half alone. After leading 34-21 at halftime, the Celts widened the lead to as much as 22.

Five UST players reached double figures in the game as Adrian Morales led the way with 18 points. senior guard Travis Lampley had 10 points and eight assists, junior Bryan Kaase hit 12 points, Barrett Lauer also shot for 12 and Caleb Williams added 10.

On day two of the Classic, the Celts suffered a heartbreaking loss to the No. 5 ranked Hillcats of Rogers State University, 62-63. Rogers State, a perennial National Association for Intercollegiate Athletics powerhouse had to work hard the full 40 minutes to stave off the Celts.

St. Thomas led 26-21 at the half, but RSU came out firing in the second half and quickly took a 33-30 lead. The contest had 11 lead changes.

The loss is the first of the season for UST and improved Rogers State to 5-0. St. Thomas was led by Lampley who had 20 points and nine assists. Kaase chipped in 11 points and eight rebounds while junior Nate McAnelly added 8 points off the bench.

The Celts next game is at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20 at Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Texas, before the team gets a break for Thanksgiving. The Celts are currently ranked No. 1 in the Red River Athletic Conference.
