No Debate on Mock Trial Success

Mock Trial TeamThe University of St. Thomas Red and Gold Mock Trial teams competed in the American Mock Trial Association Dallas Regional Competition on Feb. 15-17. While the Gold Team did not advance, the Red Team secured a bid to the Opening Round Championship, finishing fifth out of 23 teams.

UST’s Mock Trial teams competed against teams across the region, including University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Rhodes College, University of Houston and Southern Methodist University among others.

Members of both mock trial teams received personal accolades. The Red Team’s Victoria Lui, who received a perfect score, was named best witness of the tournament. Chris Agboli of UST’s Red Team was named third best lawyer of the tournament, receiving a score of 19 out of 20. Robert Huerta, of UST’s Gold team, also received a best lawyer accolade with a score of 17 points.

Rick Young, assistant professor of political science, said mock trial competitions are an integral part of the Pre-Law Program at UST.

“The importance of mock trial across the nation is increasing as it is replacing debate,” Young said. “By performing as well as we have, it proves we have a solid program that prepares students to go to law school and shows that we are competitive with the best schools in the nation.”

The series of Mock Trial Competitions fosters undergraduate student development in the areas of leadership, public speaking, rhetoric and persuasion through a legal forum. The top seven teams from each regional tournament advance to the Opening Round Championship Series in Memphis, Tenn., where the top six teams from each tournament will receive a bid to the National Championship Tournament in Washington, D.C.

UST’s Red Team will compete in the Opening Round Championship Tournament the weekend of March 22.

“This is our fourth time qualifying for the Opening Round Championship Series,” Young said. “I personally believe the team going has a great shot advancing to the National Tournament.”
