| Piccininni Appointed Dean of University Libraries |
Jim Piccininni has been appointed Dean of University Libraries following the recent merger of the Doherty Library on the UST Montrose campus and the Beran Library on the campus of St. Mary’s Seminary. This merger has already yielded cost reductions and service efficiencies.
“As Dean of University Libraries, I look forward to planning and coordinating library services for both the Doherty and Beran Libraries,” Piccininni said. “We have already begun some collaboration between the two libraries, including sharing of staff and expertise.”
Piccininni earned a master’s degree in library science from the State University of New York (SUNY) in 1983 and has been a librarian since 1984. He received tenure as a librarian at SUNY after earning a master’s degree in public administration from Marist College in 1990. He was appointed director of UST’s Doherty Library in 1991 and received tenure at UST in 1997. Since his arrival, Piccininni has seen the advent of library automation at Doherty, much growth in the library’s print and online collections and growth in the staff and services offered.
With respect to directing the Doherty Library during a time of transition from a paper-based library to a hybrid paper and digital library, Piccininni said that, “maintaining a physical library and collections for the UST community while also creating and maintaining a virtual library has presented challenges for our staff but it is especially good to know that our students and faculty benefit from the improved and expanded resources now available.”
