| WBB Celts Wrap Tourney After Loss |
The University of St. Thomas women's basketball team's first appearance in the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament ended with a 77-54 loss to Louisiana State University-Shreveport on March 1 in Waxahachie, Texas.
Amber Arceneaux-Francis led the Celts with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Maghen Lormand added 17 points, including five 3-pointers.
After a daunting 50-point loss to Shreveport a week ago, the Celts came out of the gate strong taking a 32-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.
"We executed our game plan well to start the game," said Head Coach Mike Ricks. "We made a concerted effort to defend better than we did last Saturday, and Kirstin kept us under control on the offensive end."
The teams traded baskets to start the second half, but an injury to freshman Kirstin Lee changed the Celts' fortune.
"That was a turning point," Ricks said. "Make no mistake about it; the credit goes to Coach Howell and the girls at Shreveport. They are as tough as they come, but when Kirstin went down, it affected us."
The loss concludes the Celts second season as a program.
Ricks is proud of the direction his team is headed.
"We accomplished so much this year, and we are only going to get better,” he said. “It still hasn't really sunk in that it's over, but when the dust settles, I think the girls will be able to look back and be proud of what they did and excited for the next chapter."
