WBB Honors Faculty, Staff With a Win
Photo: Hershiira Boone-Rodgers 150x200The University of St. Thomas women’s basketball team hosted its first annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation night on Jan. 28 before their home game against Bacone College. Each player recognized a faculty or staff member who has helped them during the school year. Plaques were presented in a ceremony before tipoff.

“This is something we started planning last summer,” said Head Coach Mike Ricks. “We feel like it’s very important to recognize the faculty and staff because without them our girls would not have the opportunities they have had to be successful. It was great to read what they wrote about each of the individuals who were honored. You could tell the relationships that our girls have with them are very special.”

After the ceremony, the Celts took the floor against Bacone College. The ladies jumped out to an early lead en route to a 69-62 victory.
Amber Arceneaux-Francis led the Celts with 21 points and 17 rebounds. Maghen Lormand added 20 points, and Hershiira Boone-Rodgers added 11.

Ricks said it was good to see the team start fast after they had started the last couple games a bit slowly.

“We were able to get ourselves a comfortable lead when we pushed it to 22 points in the second half,” Ricks said.

He said the Celts unfortunately let Bacone come back a little in the last five minutes.

“I would like to have seen us stay a little more focused and finish them off – something we need to work on,” he said. “Give credit to Bacone though. They kept competing, and they were able to make a dent in the lead.”

Next up for the Celts is a Red River Athletic Conference challenge against the University of the Southwest at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 2 at home in Jerabeck Gym. Tickets are $3 and free for children 12 and under.
