Wensjoe Fund Supports Study Abroad
Photo: Dr Gustavo WensjoeIn memory of Dr. Gustavo Wensjoe, the University of St. Thomas established the Dr. Gustavo Wensjoe Memorial Fund. The inaugural fundraising dinner for the Fund will be at 6 p.m. on Oct. 25 at The Courtyard on St. James Place, 1885 St. James Place. This fund is intended to provide study abroad scholarships for students at St. Thomas.
Dr. Wensjoe was the director of the Center for International Studies and a mentor and visionary who dedicated his career to promoting global understanding through higher education. UST established the Fund in 2009, when he died tragically in a car accident, along with his 10-month-old son, Julian Rodrigo, in Santa Clara, Peru.  His wife, Joanne Houck Wensjoe, was injured in the accident.
Houck Wensjoe said Dr. Wensjoe organized and modernized the CIS study abroad program to make it a nationally-ranked program. Joined by a group of UST alumni, Houck Wensjoe spearheaded the creation of the scholarship fund for the students of the University.
“All 15 UST alumni on the planning committee are Fund donors and know firsthand the benefits of a study abroad experience,” Houck Wensjoe said. “Each one of them would personally testify to the tremendous advantages such an experience can provide on cultural, academic and professional levels. We're expecting more than 180 attendees and our goal of raising $50,000 to endow the Wensjoe study abroad scholarship is within reach.”
At the event, Ambassador Chase Untermeyer, former ambassador of Qatar, will give the keynote address. Dr. Joseph McFadden, UST president emeritus, will speak in memory of Wensjoe.
CIS administers the Memorial Fund to continue Dr. Wensjoe’s mission of broadening students’ horizons and promoting global understanding. CIS hopes to begin accepting applications for summer study abroad scholarships in the spring.
Tickets start at $150, and tables are available starting at $1,500. Visit the UST Master Calendar for ticket information. For more information about the Fund, visit The attire is business/cocktail and complimentary valet parking will be provided. For more information, email
