Women’s Basketball Downs Bulldogs
Emily SeboThe University of St. Thomas women’s basketball team opened Red River Athletic Conference play on Nov. 12 with a hard-fought 54-50 victory over Jarvis Christian College.

Emily Sebo led the Celts with 12 points. Posting double-doubles, Amber Arceneaux-Francis had 10 points and 14 rebounds, and Maghen Lormand had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

“It wasn’t a pretty game offensively,” said Head Coach Mike Ricks. “We had some uncharacteristic turnovers. Defensively though, we gave great effort and really grinded it out.”

The Celts were ahead for most of the second half until a run by the Bulldogs put the outcome in jeopardy. With the Celts clinging to a 1-point lead with less than two minutes to play, Lormand drained a huge three pointer to extend the Celts lead.

“That three was a dagger,” Ricks said. “That’s a pretty big time shot for anyone to hit, let alone a freshman. That’s why we think Maghen is going to be a great player for us. She isn’t your typical freshman.”

The Celts travel to San Antonio, Texas, on Nov. 16-17 to play two games in the Halo Classic at Our Lady of the Lake University. The two contests will pit the Celts against Wayland Baptist University and St. Gregory’s University. Both schools compete in the Sooner Athletic Conference.

“We will have our hands full this weekend,” Ricks said. “Both teams are very good, and we will have to be ready to compete.”
