Feast Before the Fast at 63rd Annual Mardi Gras Gala University supporters will prepare their minds, bodies and spirits for Lent with a Mardi Gras Gala celebration –University of St. Thomas style.

“A Mardi Gras Tradition,” the 63rd Annual Mardi Gras Gala will celebrate Fat Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 12 at the Royal Sonesta Hotel Houston. The Gala is the University’s premier scholarship fundraising event and guests are invited to revel in the spirit of giving.

The Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist will be honored at the Gala, for their dedication to the University and for exemplifying the model of religious life. Mardi Gras King and Queen are seniors Barrett Lauer and Chloe Jester. The event chairs are Gina and Dr. Devinder Bhatia.

Mardi Gras, which is Fat Tuesday in French, is the day before Ash Wednesday and the first day of Lent. Fat Tuesday is a lavish, sometimes over the top, celebration before Lent, a time of fasting and reflection for Catholics. At UST, alumni, friends of the University and student representatives go all out with fancy, extravagant dresses, glittery masquerade masks, and beads, beads and more beads.

Feast Before the Fast at 63rd Annual Mardi Gras Gala At the heart of the Gala is the University’s commitment to providing students with a religious and ethical values-based education and ensuring it is within reach. Many students would be unable to attend the University without the more than $11.6 million in scholarships and grants that are awarded annually. Last year, the Gala, “Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler” raised $1 million for scholarships.

Tickets are $500 each and discounted tickets are $200 each for faculty, staff and alumni. For more information about underwriting and to reserve tickets, visit Also, contact Laura Dozier, director of Advancement Projects 713-525-3118.
