Freshmen Make 28,000 Meals for Community at Food BankAs a part of Freshman Orientation, University of St. Thomas incoming freshman volunteered at the Houston Food Bank on Aug. 24. The freshmen, with about 200 participants, produced nearly 28,000 meals. 

The project was organized in conjunction with the UST Service-Learning Program and Freshmen Orientation.

Students were divided in groups and assigned different tasks including sorting foods, loading boxes and moving boxes to a warehouse for distribution. Paloma Stier, international development and business economics and finance major, and freshman orientation leader, was charged with inspecting foods to make sure they were fit for distribution and consumption.

“Volunteering is important in college because it allows students to grow as individuals, as community leaders and shows them the importance of helping others,” Stier said. “Just a few hours volunteering can make such a big impact on another person’s life, which is a gift that cannot be measured.”

Freshmen Make 28,000 Meals for Community at Food BankIn addition to the Class of 2017, the group included the Orientation team and the men’s basketball team.

“The highlight of the day was seeing all of the students working together,” Stier said. “They did not look at skin color, age, classification or differences they may have; they came together as a team to work hard and collaborate with one another.”

The Service-Learning Program expands opportunities for students to engage in public and community service and advocates the importance of civic responsibility in students’ educational experience. More than 2,000 UST students, from 23 departments and programs, have benefited from learning opportunities through the University’s Service-Learning Program.
