| Golf Tournament Raises $200K for Scholarships |
The Annual Scholarship Tee-Up Tournament raised more than $200,000 for University of St. Thomas scholarships on Nov. 5, an increase of about $40,000 from last year. The event was held at the Pine Forest Country Club and benefited the general scholarship fund.
Paul Layne, executive vice president of the Howard Hughes Corporation and University board member, served as the tournament chair. Diamond Sponsors included Harvey Builders, Inc., David Harvey and Joe Cleary.
A total of 56 teams played, the most number of teams that have participated in the tournament. They were joined by the UST men’s and women’s golf players. Tournament participants were able to rent a student “ringer” as a fifth member on their team for $1,000. All of the teams that won had a student “ringer” on the team.
First place went to the alumni team of Chuck Orrico ’84, Lance Wingfield ’86, Mark Candela ’85 and Marc Fraizer ’86. The “Dead Last” award went to the Cypress Milwork, led by Hector Noriega.
Senior finance major and UST golf player James Rayner played with the winning team, shooting 5-under-par, and the team shot -23 in a scramble format. Rayner said the scholarship tournament was a memorable day.
“Chuck and Lance were part of the golf team in the 80s, and it was great hearing some of their stories,” Rayner said.
Originally from Australia and a transfer student, Rayner is on both academic and golf scholarships. He said without the support, he would not be able to attend UST.
“To those who came and supported the event I can only say ‘Thank you,’” Rayner said. “To raise $200,000 for students was a big thrill for me and my teammates. Hopefully we can continue the fundraiser well into the future.”
The general scholarship fund helps deserving students earn a quality, liberal arts education in Houston’s only Catholic university. This year, the University awarded more than $11.6 million in total institutional aid.
