UST Sponsors Olympic Marathon Trials

UST Sponsors Olympic Marathon TrialsThe University of St. Thomas will sponsor the United States Olympic Trials Marathon, which will take place in Downtown Houston on Jan. 14, one day before the Chevron Houston Marathon.

As a sponsor, UST joins a group of 15 local companies, from Gallery Furniture to Waste Management, who will market and fund the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials Marathon as part of a “We are Houston 2012” campaign. More than 300 of the nation’s best marathoners will enter, and the trials will determine the three men and three women who will compete in the Olympic Games in London. The Trials will showcase Houston to a television audience reaching millions of viewers nationwide.

UST President Dr. Robert Ivany and the “We Are Houston” sponsors participated in an Olympic flag-raising ceremony with Olympic athletes on Nov. 10 at City Hall.

The sponsorship will bring valuable exposure to the University during the Olympic Trials events and in local media. In early January, look for Dr. Ivany to be featured in “We Are Houston” television commercials on KTRK Channel 13. The University will also be listed as a sponsor in Houston Chronicle advertisements, the Houston Marathon Race Programs and billboards on major Houston freeways.

The UST sponsorship will also be included at the Discovery Green fan event Jan. 12-13 and inside the Houston Marathon Expo on Jan. 13-14. UST will have dedicated cheering stations on the Olympic Trials Marathon course and the Chevron Houston Marathon course. The University annually hosts a cheer station along the marathon course in front of Link-Lee Mansion at 3800 Montrose, cheering for UST faculty, staff, student and alumni runners.

The University’s sponsorship was underwritten by David Harvey, vice president of the board of directors and chair of the UST Capital Campaign, to generate awareness about the University. Harvey is CEO and Chairman of D.E. Harvey Builders and a marathon runner.
