Sydney Keller is getting ready to attend law school at UT in the fall! Becky Armenta will take the next step in her music education journey equipped with experience as a University Singers’ album vocalist and master training from renowned vocal experts. Thanks to her accomplishments at UST, she’ll be attending Baylor University on a full scholarship and stipend in the fall.

Katherine Glinka views her singing as a way to express hope from a higher power. Through  participation in the University Singers, she’s developed her repertoire to feature early and sacred music. She’ll keep the tune going during her graduate studies at Westminster Choir College in the fall.

Megan Vaughan came from Colorado to find a welcoming home in Houston and at UST. With a full tuition scholarship, she’ll begin graduate school at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee in the fall.


May 16, 2017  Luisana Rivas Looks Forward to Vocal Master’s Program

Venezuela is a continent away, but international transfer student Luisana Rivas feels right at home in Houston. She appreciates the many performance opportunities UST gave her starting in freshman year, and credits classes on ethical thinking with making a real impact on her approach to life issues. With a full tuition scholarship for two years, Luisana will begin her master’s in voice performance  at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee in the fall.

In November 2015, Paola Urgiles, M.Ed. ’12, was knocking on doors, campaigning as a candidate for an at-large seat on the Board of Education for her local school district in Colorado. She ran because of her belief that those in office didn’t look like the people they represented in her community.

Every day for more than 30 years, Lori Ginsburg thought about returning to college to finish her degree. She left college in 1984 because she lacked direction and did not know what she wanted to be when she grew up. Now, through the University of St. Thomas Adult Degree Completion program, Ginsburg is on her way to completing a bachelor’s in liberal arts.

In a board room in the Cameron School of Business on May 2, seniors in the University of St. Thomas undergraduate business capstone class presented recommendations to leaders of CSAT Solutions for the annual Case Competition. CSAT Solutions repairs laptops, tablets and smart phones for companies like Apple and Dell, and its executive team asked students to help them decide where the company should setup the next repair facility in Europe.

Alexandria “Allie” Parrish, a senior transfer student and soon-to-be graduate of University of St. Thomas, finds the human person absolutely fascinating. Parrish, herself, is fascinating. She has been blind since birth and moved to Houston alone at only 18 years old. She is a self-reliant, compassionate person who strives to dissolve stigmas about being visually impaired and fight for those who struggle with mental illness.

Durrell Green

International studies major Durrell Green aspires to be a Foreign Service Officer, or FSO, a federal diplomat whose duties include promoting international peace and democracy. Green was selected for the prestigious and highly competitive U.S. Foreign Service Internship Program, a two-summer experience in which interns get a firsthand look at the affairs in foreign policy construction and implementation.

Lauren Shelley, MLA ’15 – a high school English teacher in Spring Branch ISD – earned her Master in Liberal Arts degree from UST in December, with a concentration in English. 

“I entered UST’s MLA program with the goal of teaching dual-credit English classes to my students,” said Shelley. “Now, I’m employed with both Spring Branch ISD and Houston Community College.”

The new facility, containing more than 100,000 square-feet of modern lab space and classrooms, will meet the increasing demand for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) degree programs in Houston.

For James Ramos ’14, communication alumnus, the use of social media was a natural way for him to share messages with anybody regardless of faith of culture.  So when the Catholic website Aleteia began its search for 60 millennials to join its Digital Street Team that would cover Pope Francis’ visit to the United States this September, Ramos jumped at the opportunity.

During his acceptance speech at the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards in April, Steve Harvey commented, “This is for my production team—you don’t know who they are, but they make the show what it is.” Kim Gagne ’86 communications alumna, is part of that team, working as a supervising producer on “Steve Harvey,” Harvey’s eponymous talk-variety show.

Rama Gerig

Growing up, Rama Gerig was not allowed to speak about her father. Her father’s felony conviction and 20-year incarceration left her mother to raise four children alone. Knowing personally the trauma that children of incarcerated parents face, Gerig founded Society’s Forgotten Children, a University of St. Thomas club that “breaks the silence,” and she will graduate this May.

For nearly 25 years Walter Suhr ’89 has been making the citizens of Houston dance to the rhythms his band, Mango Punch!, has produced. The band and its music reflect the diversity of Houston as the musicians play music from the 40s and 50s, the top 40 charts, Cumbia and Latin music. Recently, they have added Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars to their repertoire of more than 200 songs.

After his first semester at law school, C.J. Miller ’14, found himself at the top of his class. Earning a perfect 4.0 GPA, he is the first student to achieve that at the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center in more than 10 years. While Miller has maintained an incredible work ethic, and impeccable style—he dresses for success in the southern gentleman uniform of khakis and pastel button-down shirts—he credits University of St. Thomas for providing him with the foundation that led him to success.

Pope Francis has named UST English professor Clinton Allen Brand as a knight of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of St. Gregory the Great for his “invaluable” work incorporating Anglican liturgical rites, prayers, and customs into Catholic worship for the Ordinariates—former Anglican communities that have entered into full communion with Rome with permission to retain many of their traditions.

With many different educational trends, it is often difficult to decide how to present particular topics in the classroom. To figure out which methods of learning are most effective, Dr. Albert Ribes and Dr. Alexandra Simmons-Nout, both assistant professor of biology, decided to use a scientific approach. They, with the help of junior biology major Thao K.T. Nguyen, and Dr. Jack Follis of the department of mathematics, designed an experiment to measure the impact of using a molecule visualization software on students’ understanding of specific genetic concepts.

The University of St. Thomas has become the 55th member institution of the Texas Medical Center. With a current enrollment of more than 3,500 students, UST is housed on an urban campus centrally located in Houston’s Museum District, near the TMC.

The University of St. Thomas has received a $5 million contribution from an anonymous benefactor in support of its planned Center for Science and Health Professions. The new center will accommodate the growing demand for the university’s highly regarded STEM programs as well as its Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing.
