Volunteerism
Volunteerism, or community service, is action taken to meet the needs of others and to better the community as a whole. Community service may be undertaken as a one-time event or a regular commitment over time; it may be performed as part of a group or individually; it is the right and responsibility of every member of society.
Benefits of volunteerism:
- gaining work experience
- exploring social issues
- working with diverse groups of people
- exercising leadership skills
- connecting classroom theory and practical application
- sharing energy and ideas
- expanding capabilities, and enhancing understanding of the role of citizen

Volunteer Organizations on Campus
Best Buddies - UST has had a Best Buddies Chapter since 1991. College students are matched with an adult client of The Center, serving people with intellectual disabilities. Occasions for fun and friendship include chapter activities, events with other college chapters and their Buddies, and one-to-one contact. Literacy Initiative for Today (LIFT) - The UST program helps community members learn the English language. Volunteer instructors and students meet every Saturday on campus for ten weeks of classroom instruction. It is one of the few English-as-a-Second Language (ESL) programs available on weekends in the area. During these 3-hour sessions both tutor and learner benefit from the learning process. Morning and afternoon sessions are available. The instructor shares his/her knowledge while gaining insight about the learner's culture and experiences.
