DIRECTOR OF NURSING PROGRAM
The
University of
St. Thomas , a Catholic, Basilian institution of higher education in
Houston , seeks a doctorally prepared nurse to re-open a once flourishing collegiate program in nursing. The successful candidate will possess leadership abilities, managerial experience and a wholehearted commitment to the core values of the university. He or she will possess a master’s degree in nursing with doctoral preparation in nursing or a related field and have prior experience in teaching and academic administration. Candidates should have experience in: a) developing and evaluating baccalaureate and master’s curricula, b) program and school development, c) securing specialty accreditation, d) fund raising, and e) faculty recruitment, mentorship and development.
The Director of Nursing Program is the executive officer of the nursing program and is responsible for carrying out the policies of the program. The Director will report to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs and will be responsible for:
a. insuring that nursing students are educated in accordance with the directives of the Catholic church pertaining to medical ethics and that participating hospitals abide by similar medical ethics while conducting clinical training for nursing students;
b. providing leadership in the development and evaluation of curriculum and teaching learning practices;
c. developing the course schedule after consultation with full-time program faculty, and overseeing instructional staffing;
d. working with the Director of Assessment to generate an approved outcomes assessment/institutional effectiveness plan for each degree program offered;
e. assuring a careful yearly evaluation of each full-time and part-time faculty member of the program, and recommending to the dean the retention, promotion and tenure of faculty;
f. securing and maintaining program accreditation;
g. providing general supervision of the program including its budget;
h. maintaining an active file of candidates for possible appointment to fill vacancies, and in the event of vacancy, the program director shall have primary responsibility for recruiting candidates;
i. assisting the Vice President for Institutional Advancement to raise funds for construction of a nursing facility and its endowment;
j. assisting the Admissions Office in student recruitment programs; and,
k. consulting frequently with program faculty members and the Library Director to maintain adequate holdings, both print and non-print materials, relative to the discipline and to promote the use of these materials by faculty and students.
The successful candidate will have a thorough and comprehensive understanding of and commitment to Catholic medical ethics as found in Ethical and Religious Directives for Health Care from the United States Catholic Conference and be dedicated to the principles of Catholic education described in the apostolic document Ex Corde Ecclesiae and The Application of Ex Corde Ecclesiae for the United States by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops.
