Recreational Sports Internship
The Office of Recreational Sports at the University of St. Thomas is offering an internship opportunity for the current academic year to provide critical experiences within a comprehensive recreational sports enterprise. The program is intended for students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in recreation, physical education, kinesiology, sports management, college student personnel administration or equivalent. The intern will receive leadership experiences in all aspects of the comprehensive program including: intramural sports, fitness, sport clubs, outdoor recreation, facilities management, co-programming and marketing. The intern will not be paid, but will receive membership to the Jerabeck Activity and Athletic Center and free participation in fitness classes.
UST Recreational Sports Mission Statement
The Office of Recreational Sports’ purpose is to provide programs that promote a balance between academic and non-academic life. This office promotes health, wellness, and positive health behaviors to the UST Community by offering a wide variety of recreational activities and sports. The department encourages students to develop and/or improve leisure activity skills and to begin regular physical participation, which will continue throughout life.
Internship Purpose
The purpose of the internship is to provide a transition from the traditional academic curriculum to a practical application of theories, concepts, knowledge, and skills in a professional setting. The goal is to provide an active opportunity for the intern to gain exposure and experience in a wide variety of recreation programming, facilities and services opportunities in a university setting. Interns will gain experience through participation in programs that range from intramural sports, facilities and equipment management, risk management, fitness and wellness, outdoor recreation trips, sport clubs, marketing and special event programming in addition to departmental orientation and professional development opportunities. The internship will provide the student with an opportunity to evaluate and develop her/his own values and ethics and achieve personal fulfillment and growth.
Internship Responsibilities and Requirements

General responsibilities include providing assistance, program development, administrative operations, or special projects for both the department and in a specific functional area as assigned.

The Intern will have responsibilities within all areas of recreational sports based on individual experiences and preferences.

The intern is required to meet with their supervisor prior to the start of the internship to discuss expectations.

The intern must be willing to work evenings and weekends as necessary, hours determined by the supervisor.

The intern must attend and participate in the department’s orientation program and workshops.

First Aid and CPR/AED certifications should be current or obtained within 3 weeks of hire.
Qualifications
Experience and interest in the field of recreational sports as well as a major in recreation, physical education, kinesiology, sports management, college student personnel administration or equivalent is preferred. Those individuals that demonstrate leadership, communication skills, initiative, and organizational skills will receive preference.
