UST Wireless Network
As wireless networking becomes more common at the University of St. Thomas campus, students, faculty and staff can enjoy the benefits of on-the-go Internet and electronic mail access.
More than 50 Access Points ( AP ) are installed throughout UST campus, including Link Lee, T.P. O’Rourke Hall, Welder Hall, Malloy Hall, Robertson Science Hall, Strake Hall, Tiller Hall Herzstein, Monaghan Carriage House, De La Salle House, Crooker, Guinan Hall, Anderson, and Cullen Hall. The University of St. Thomas utilizes a Cisco Aironet Access Point, for device connectivity that conforms to the IEEE 802.11 standard. These devices include Cisco System technology and will be upgraded to 802.11a/g as network requirements change.
Since UST’s wireless network uses industry standard protocols for signal transmission and reception, computer conforming to the IEEE 802.11 standard will work. The technology is relatively inexpensive, but worth the cost for cable-free networking. UST recommends that computers be purchased with the newer 802.11b standard that is used in IT wireless deployments.
Although the APs are located in certain buildings, wireless network coverage can extend to other areas such as the Academic Mall. On average the AP’s cover 150 foot average range. This coverage allows computer users to access the Internet outside the Moran Center Café This means students can eat lunch and surf the Web at the same time, or chat online with someone on campus.
As more wireless technology is added, UST students, faculty and staff may find that going to a computer lab to surf the Web may be more than an option; it could be a thing of the past.
