What is available at the Learning & Writing Center?
- The Writing Lab.
Writing Consultants/Tutors are available anytime. We are here to assist you with any writing assignment, whether it is for English, History, Philosophy, or Theology. You don't even have to have a written rough draft. If you are having trouble getting started, just bring us your assignment sheet and ideas, and we will guide you through the writing process.
- Computers.
The Writing Lab also includes IBM compatible computers for all your word processing needs. These computers are available to anyone anytime we are open. We also provide limited Internet and e-mail access. You do not have to meet with a tutor in order to use a computer, but you must sign in first.
- Math and Sciences.
The LWC offers limited hours for math and sciences. We generally have at least two tutors on staff who have regular hours each week.
Why should I go to the LWC?
A lot of times, students have difficulty understanding something because it had not been explained to them in a manner that fits with the way they as individuals learn. If something in the math classroom does not make sense or if a writing assignment needs more work, then the LWC tutors are trained to guide you through the assignment. During one-on-one conferences tutors are prepared to discuss writing assignments or course material. Finally, every tutorial session ends with the tutor filling out a Conference Note. There are two copies of these notes. One is kept here for our records and the other is sent to the professor to let him or her know that you came in for extra help. UST professors are glad to know that their students are utilizing on-campus resources. It shows them that you are willing to put forth an extra effort in their classes.
Do I need to make an appointment?
You do not need an appointment to meet with a tutor to discuss a paper. Remember, writing consultants are available anytime we are open. Just show up. The same holds true if you can meet with a math tutor during regularly scheduled times.
When should I get a tutor?
As soon as you think you might need a tutor, come by the center. We just recommend that you do not wait until the last minute to come in for help.
Do I have to be tutored the whole semester?
Not necessarily. You may only be having problems with one paper or with one chapter. However, you are more than welcome to come back if you need us.
Where do we meet?
All tutoring takes place here at the LWC. The time is between you and the tutor. If the tutors are busy, we offer a great study environment while you are waiting.
How much is this going to cost?
All services at the LWC are free, or at least have already been paid for with your tuition.
