LWC Profile
The Learning and Writing Center is a service-oriented resource designed to assist students and their academic needs.
The Center, located on the 2nd floor of Crooker, room 207, is primarily a tutorial center for writing. It also provides tutoring in areas such as science, math and other core curriculum subjects.
The tutoring program of the Learning & Writing Center (LWC) is now certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) under its International Tutor Training Certification Program (ITTCP). The LWC tutors have been receiving ongoing specialized training in tutoring and now have the opportunity of becoming certified as a result.
History
Since 1989, the CRLA has certified over 1,000 college and university tutorial programs in the United States and a few other countries.
Purpose
The ITTCP aims at recognizing and reinforcing successful tutor work. Moreover, the program sets common high standards for tutor skills and training. The certification has three levels:
Each level requires an additional ten hours of training and 25 hours of tutoring. The CRLA’s ITTCP has certified the UST LWC tutoring program at all three levels.
Endorsements
The following entities have endorsed CRLA's ITPC: the National Association for Developmental Education, Commission XVI of the American College Personnel Association, the American Council of Developmental Education Associations, Association for the Tutoring Professional, and the National Tutoring Association.
