University of Saint Thomas Provides an
Education at the Crossroads
Your road is ours.
Your pathways are never foreign to ours.
We are the friends of your calling as seekers,
the brethren of your weariness,
the admirers of your conquests.
Pope Paul VI, message to scholars, 1965
The late Jacques Maritain spoke of an “Education at the Crossroads,” and that is a good description of our venture here at the University of St. Thomas . We are the Catholic university in Houston , and this positions us to be at the “crossroads” in many ways. Houston is a great crossroads of cultures, businesses, medicine, the arts, and education. We sit near the center of Houston, at the crossroad of Montrose Blvd. and Alabama, a gateway to the museum district, not far from either downtown or the West end. We stand at the crossroads of liberal education and engagement with the professions and society. The heart of our education, as we state in our mission, is the dialogue of faith and reason, the crossroads of revelation and science. As we educate leaders of faith and character, we understand that faith is a great impetus to liberal learning; faith is an anchor for respect for truth and goodness, the dignity of the human person and the hunger and thirst for justice. With the prayerful support and witness of two religious communities, the Basilian priests, the founding order of UST, and the Franciscan Sisters of the Eucharist, we at St Thomas seek to develop men and women who are prayerful, thoughtful, and competent so as to be authentic witnesses to the splendor of truth. We have an excellent faculty committed to teaching and learning, engaged in research, scholarship and cultural pursuits. We are a student centered campus ever seeking ways to support and develop the curiosity, talent, and noble ambition of our students. |
