Dia de Los Muertos Celebration
Tuesday, November 3, 2009 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM
Photo: Dia De Los Meurtos Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead ) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and many Latin American countries which focuses family and friends gathering to pray for and remember friends and relatives who have died. The celebration occurs on the 1st and 2nd of November, in connection with the Catholic holy days of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day.

The University of St. Thomas Spanish club will celebrate Día de los Muertos beginning on Monday, Oct. 26, with a week-long memorial display on the second floor of Malloy Hall, 3815 Mt. Vernon. On Nov. 3, the event will close with a reception and potluck lunch with typical Hispanic food and music.

The last year was a very difficult one for us, as we lost many pillars of our community. This event provides an opportunity for us to remember the legacy that they left for us to follow.

Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts. Observance of the holiday in Mexican-American communities in the United States has become more important and widespread as the community grows numerically and economically. The Day of the Dead is generally seen as a misnomer, as it is a day to celebrate the life of those that have gone before us.

To participate in the memorial, please bring photos of your deceased loved ones to be placed in the altar. All pictures must be framed with contact information of the owner and identifying the subjects in the picture behind the frame. For the potluck lunch on Nov. 3, bring a dish of your choice that day for everyone to enjoy. Items can be dropped off in Prof. Ramiro Juárez’s office, Malloy 215.
