Mathematics
The Mathematics Department at the University of St. Thomas offers degree programs in a variety of mathematics and mathematics-related fields for undergraduate students. Students can pursue a BA degree with a major or minor in mathematics or a minor in computer science.

Students can also receive dual degrees in mathematics and engineering through the Cooperative Engineering Program, a joint program with other four-year universities. The
department also offers a curriculum for teacher certification in mathematics at the 4th-8th grade and 8th-12th grade levels.

Degree Plans

  • BA in Mathematics
  • Cooperative Engineering Program
  • Minor in Mathematics
  • Minor in Computer Science
  • Joint majors with Philosophy and Spanish

Curriculum
The curriculum for mathematics majors contains a central core of courses that provides a solid basis for advanced work and is tailored to fit the needs and objectives of individual students. Advanced course work is chosen in consultation with faculty advisors. The variety of courses available permits the student not only to obtain a broad exposure to those fields of mathematics most useful in the physical and engineering sciences, but also to gain experience with mathematics used in business and management sciences.

All graduating seniors who major in mathematics must take the Educational Testing Service (ETS) Major Field Test in Mathematics before graduation. All graduating elementary and secondary teachers with a teaching field in mathematics must take the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards™ (TExES) mathematics test for certification (see School of Education). This test should be taken during the semester of certification.

Cooperative Engineering
In the current market, there is a growing demand for professionals who have both technical training and a broad background in the arts, humanities, logic and philosophy. The University of St. Thomas offers students the opportunity to prepare for a career in engineering or technology while obtaining a quality liberal arts education.

Engineering executives must make decisions that have social and cultural consequences as well as technical implications. Graduates who have critical thinking and reasoning skills, beyond their technical knowledge are valuable workers in a global economy.

The University of St. Thomas has cooperative agreements with Texas A&M University, the University of Houston and the University of Notre Dame. The student earns a BA degree in mathematics from the University of St. Thomas and a BS degree in engineering at the cooperative institution. During the three years at the University of St. Thomas, the student completes an individualized plan of study that combines a broad liberal arts background with the prerequisites for the program at the chosen school.

Computer Science
Computer Science covers a wide array of concepts ranging from computer program design and development to the theories behind the efficient and effective application of automatic processes to model real world processes and solve real world problems. The Computer Science minor is an excellent way for students to augment skills and knowledge so that they are more attractive to employers and graduate schools.

The computer science minor will instruct students in algorithms and program development, the theory and practice of data organization and management, and
the theories and tools needed to solve a wide array of problems in science and engineering.

Scholarships
The Distinguished Student of Mathematics Scholarship Endowment Fund and the Dr. William A. and Margaret Reddie Endowed Scholarship in Mathematics provide financial assistance to majors in mathematics. The Mathematics Department Research and Development Endowment Fund supports the Department of Mathematics.

Knowledge and Skill
The Mathematics Department prepares students for careers in mathematics, engineering, computer science, and education as well as other mathematics-related fields. Students graduating from the program will:

  • Learn to speak and write effectively
  • Understand values, ethics and human nature
  • Develop critical thinking skills
  • Learn mathematical principles and applications
